Praised for his “virtuosity” and “melodic and rhythmic acrobatics” by the NACWPI Journal, Om Srivastava is a saxophonist, composer, and recording artist who performs, creates, and collaborates in the intersections of contemporary and Indian music.
His compositions have been commissioned by Price Hill Will, PASIC, Off-Latch Press, The Carolina Quartet, Assembly Quartet, New Thread Quartet, the Cincinnati Conservatory, and others.
As a passionate educator, he served 8 years as Adjunct Professor of Saxophone at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Xavier University. Om has performed throughout the United States and abroad including notable collaborations alongside Tony Award winner Matthew Morrison and the Lexington Pops, renowned world guitarist Fareed Haque at the Lincoln Center, Pulitzer Finalist Timo Andres, and with the RagaTone Ensemble at the New York Public Theatre.
Om’s most recent album is 7th Life, a contemporary Indo-Fusion project with tabla virtuoso and frequent collaborator Jim Feist which features bold compositions and improvisations traversing groove and trance against a tapestry of sophisticated Indian rhythmic structure. His recording solo debut was the Indian-fusion album Antara released on Teal Creek Records.
Om is a founding member of dosa, a visual and electro-acoustic duo with Boston-based percussionist and composer David Abraham who saw their 2019 debut at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention with the multimedia work “Rasa: A Sonic Tribute to Forgotten Humanist Bollywood”. dosa was also the recipient of a Price Hill Festival commission for “Salient Points on a Dream”, an electronic-visual work celebrating the centennial of Mohandas Gandhi’s non-violent resistance movement. Most recently dosa was featured in the premiere issue of the online arts publishing platform, Off-Latch Press with the commissioned electronic-visual work and second movement of the Rasa project entitled “Pyaasa.”
Om completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in saxophone performance with a cognate in ethnomusicology specializing in Hindustani rhythm at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. He earned his MM at CCM and his BM at Ball State University. His primary instructors are James Bunte, Nathan Nabb and George Wolfe. His first saxophone instructor and major influence was Larry Kirkman. Om was awarded a 2015 IndianRaga Fellowship for world music and is a 2017 Fellow at the New Music Sessions in Cortona, Italy.
Om resides in New York City where he works as a freelance composer, private instructor, and saxophonist.
